"My Name"

My Name

My name is too much confusion. In English it means virgin mother of Christ. In Spanish it means virgin Madre de Cristo. My name is like salted tea in the morning. Never finding the way to pronouncing it right, never finding the right name. I am the girl who people sometimes baptize under a new name too many times.

I am named after a pretty and bad little girl that started in a famous Mexican soap opera. My mother watched it all the time. I am the opposite of that little girl. I am not as pretty and I am certainly not as mean. My mother was going to name me Janet, but my grandmother thought it was too ugly. My mother obeyed like a good daughter that always listens to her mother. Still, up to this day, I tell her what a fool she was and she agrees. Janet. My favorite name. I wonder if my grandmother even remembers this event.

People say that my nameâ�™s origin is from Latin. Others say it comes fro Hebrew. Either way, it means the same thing. In Latin it is related to Mariel and Mary and comes from Maria, but to me, it doesnâ�™t matter where it comes from. It is like getting an â�œA-â�, an â�œAâ� is an â�œAâ�. Mariela. It is all the same. To some, my name is unique, but it to me is like drinking the same water with the same flavor every day.

I was born in 1991 the Chinese year of the Ram. They say ram people are elegant and highly accomplished. I am not sure about being elegant, but I always do my best like a newly born turtle trying to get to the ocean. Rams are also shy, which I am. Like the moon hiding during the day and going out during the night in its element. People do not really know me unless I am in my element, where I can just be my true self. Rams also constantly question their surrounding and life in general. I am always puzzled about life. Why do people think a certain way? Why do I think a certain way? These questions I constantly struggle with.

People almost always say my name incorrectly the first time. Always giving me a new name and adding more letters than are necessary. This is always annoying like when little kids pull on my kittyâ�™s tail. How come every year there is someone who says or gets my name wrong?

Janet. Thatâ�™s what I would have liked to be named. Maybe I will change my name when I am older like when a baby chick changes into its adult feathers. I would have settled for any name as long it was unique, but somewhat common. Something that people would not mispronounce or forget, but until that day I am still Mariela.
